Award Will Help School of Design Examine Students’ Attitudes Toward Sustainable Materials

A research project by a team from the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ School of Design is the recipient of one of two $5,000 awards from the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling (NYSAR3) and the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP21). October is Campus Sustainability Month

As­­­ autumn rolls in and temperatures begin to cool off, Sustainability Management has several events and activities planned throughout Campus Sustainability Month, some of which are already underway. On Oct. 1, Sustainability Coordinator Meg Lowe, teamed up with Director of Engagement Programs Syeisha Byrd to offer a virtual cooking class, which used ingredients from the food pantry and Pete’s Giving Garden to create a simple, yet delicious Taco Bowl. The pair is hosting two more virtual Pantry Cookin’ classes on Oct. 22 and on Nov. 12. Sign up on Pete’s Giving Garden website to claim a spot today. Read more…

One of the big challenges we are facing this Fall is how to work and socialize together safely. Community building is one of our core values in Design – both building our own community internally, as well as reaching out and serving the surrounding community in Syracuse. Despite the rain and chilly temps, students gathered outdoors (masked and distanced) to garden together under the supervision of Meg Lowe and Prof. Seyeon Lee. All day, the joy of getting one’s hands dirty, being productive, and spending social time with others was palpable. Campus as a Laboratory for Sustainability Funding Available Oct. 31

The Syracuse University Campus as a Laboratory for Sustainability (CALS) program is offering up to $75,000 for faculty or student projects that advance the University’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, directly or indirectly, or through raising awareness on campus about climate disruption and environmental sustainability.
